Awesome 80s Bedrooms part 4: The Princess Bride Edition

I’ve been having a lot of fun searching through old movies for awesome kid-centric bedrooms, so I figured I’d take a look at another one this week.  This time I’m going to examine “The Grandson’s” room from The Princess Bride.  For some reason it sort of escaped me until just this second that Fred Savage’s character goes un-named in the flick.  Also, much like Robbie’s room in Poltergeist Savage’s character in The Princess Bride has some obvious favorite pop culture obsessions (well, at least the set designers did) as we’ll see as we take a look around his room.

I’m gonna start with the largest collection of fun stuff, the cluttered shelves behind his bed…

Princess 7

1). MOTU Battle Armor He-Man and Battle Cat

2). MOTU lesser known villains Leech, Grizzlor, Spikor and Webstor

3). Secret Wars Captain America

4). Burger King Empire Strikes Back Luke on Dagobah Glass

**UPDATE** Thanks to Esteban from the Roboplastic Apocalypse for identifying one of the comics on the shelf behond Savage as an issue of Legion of Superheroes (number 320)…

Legion_of_Super-Heroes_Vol_2_320

So, from what I can gather Savage’s character is a pretty big Masters of the Universe fan who loves the villains in particular (we’ll see more in a second) and probably watches She-Ra.  Also, I love that vintage bag of Cheetos.  Remember when you could see the actual Cheetos you were going to buy before you consumed them?

**Update**  The Red/Orange toy in the top left of the above screenshot is yet another MOTU toy, Skeletor’s Landshark!

5). 1987 Quaker Chewy Granola Walter Peyton Poster

6). MOTU Hordak riding Spydor

This might be the largest He-Man and the Masters of the Universe toy collection I’ve seen in a movie bedroom.  There are a couple of other figures hiding on the shelf behind Savage, but I can’t get a clear enough image to tell who they are.  Also, the flick is most likely set in Chicago as Savage is playing a pretty big Bears fan.  Not only does he have a Walter Payton poster in his room, but he’s also wearing a Paytoon Jersey as well as another famous Bears player on his wall…

Princess 4

7). William “The Refrigerator” Perry Poster

Princess 2

Getting back to Masters of the Universe though, check out the items in the picture above…

8). Lazer Blazers Skeletor sticker

9). He-Man figure

There’s another figure next to Savage’s head that I can’t make out.  Anyone have any guesses?  In closing, there were only a couple of other items that I spotted, but they’re pretty darn cool.  First up, the most obvious thing featured in Savage’s room…

Princess 1

10). A copy of the baseball video game Hardball! by Accolade.

And I’m going to make an educated guess that he’s playing the game on a Commadore 64 based on on the joystick he’s using in this final screencap…

Princess 6

11). Quick Shot Joystick

quickshot

All of this stuff was cool, but my favorite discovery snooping around Savage’s room is a certain U.K. 2000 A.D. comic character t-shirt draped over a chair in the above screenshot…

12). Judge Dredd T-Shirt

Much like the Punisher poster in young Eugene’s room in The Monster Squad, this Dredd shirt seems a little out of place for the age of the character.  That being said, I still think it’s an awesome artifact to be hiding in the background of The Princess Bride!

So, did I miss anything fun?

Eugene’s Room from The Monster Squad

Halloween Hangover: Robbie’s Room from Poltergeist

Well another Halloween season has come and gone, but I’m not quite ready for it to complete move on.  I’d intended to post more during the month, but like always life got in the way and blah blah blah.  You know what it’s like.  So, as a little bit of an extra Halloween-y goodie I thought it’d be fun to take a closer look at another pop culture bedroom (I examined rooms from The Monster Squad and Adventures in Babysitting earlier in the year), this time Robbie and Carol Anne’s room from Poltergeist!

936full-poltergeist-poster

Now I’m going to concentrate on Robbie’s half of the room because honestly Carol A\nne’s side was pretty darn sparse and boring.  Seriously, there’s just nothing to it, see…

Poltergeist 3

I mean there’s that cow poster, a Precious Moments poster, and that baby carriage, but I’m falling asleep just listing that stuff.  Robbie’s side of the room on the the other hand is chock full of all kinds of 80s era awesome.  I mean just check out this one screen shot!

Poltergeist 8

Alright, let’s break this room down…

1). Darth Vader Action Figure Carrying case.

2). Toys ‘R Us Geoffrey Sleeping Bag.

3). Speak & Spell.

speak_and_spell_11.jpeg

4). Empire Strike Back Host Laser Turret and Imperial Probe Droid playset

Turret and Probot

5). Star Wars Tie Fighter.

tie 2

6). Poster from the movie Alien.

alien1979_poster

7). Star Wars bedsheets.

That is a whole lot of awesome for just one scene in the film, and that’s not even counting the stuff that I can’t identify (like that blue robot thing on the floor just to the right of his mom or the weird 1988 Superbowl Champion poster above his bed that makes no sense considering the movie was released in 1982!)  First off, I have to say that it’s pretty cool that Robbie was such a huge fan of Star Wars, though I guess that was pretty indicative of every other kid from the time.  I know I had a metric ton of Star Wars toys by this time including those sheets.

**Update**  Thanks to Esteban from the Roboplastic Apocalypse for identifying the blue robot as Karrio, the Micronauts carrying case!

karrio2

karriobox1

It’s also not even half of the SW stuff in his room…

Poltergeist 5

In fact, here’s some more in the above screenshot.

8). Star Wars A New Hope poster.

9). Yoda Hand Puppet.

$T2eC16VHJGYFFl!PmY1KBR,T),mzkw~~60_35

10). Taun Taun and various Star Wars action figures (including Tatooine Luke, Hoth Han Solo, FX-7 Medical Droid, and R2-D2)

VINTAGETAUNTAUN

While collecting screenshots of Robbie’s room it was kind of neat to notice that the toys on the shelf behind his bed kept moving around from scene to scene so either they were always getting knocked over or Oliver Robins was having fun playing with them between takes!

Here’s one last screenshot with yet more Star Wars stuff!

Poltergeist 9

11). C3-P0 and R2-D2 poster (it’s dark in the screenshot, but trust me, I’ve stared at it long enough to recognize them.)

12). Darth Vader poster.

13). Bert & Ernie poster.

14). Kick ass Chewbacca jacket!

So, anything I missed?

Happy 2013 Halloween from Branded in the 80s!

Well, we made it though another Halloween season.  I want to personally thank everyone who follow my countdown this year via the site, facebook, instgram, and twitter, and I hope each and every one of you has a monster haul of candy this evening.  Do what you can to avoid Endless Mike and the pumpkin-smashing Hallo-Weenies, compliment Bill Haverchuck on his rad Bionic Woman costume if you see him, and remember to stop by the pumpkin patch and say “hi” to Linus (he needs the encouragement.)

So, to end this countdown of vintage ghoulish Garbage Pail Kids with a bang, here are some very seasonally appropriate sticker cards!  First up, from series four comes 153a&b, Jack O. Lantern and Duncan Pumpkin painted by David Burke!

31 - Jack O Lantern

You have to give props to a kid who can carve their own face so well!  Next up is a gross later entry in the GPK cannon, stickers 438 a&b, Hallie Ween and Trick or Tricia, which hail from series eleven and were painted by Tom Bunk!

31 - Part 2

Alright folks, everyone have a safe and awesome Halloween!

Once again, I’m also helping to organize the annual Countdown to Halloween alongside the tireless and super cool monster kid John Rozum. So if you like what I’m doing over here, you might want to head on over to the Countdown site and check out the huge list of other sites participating in this year’s spooky festivities. There’s also a like-minded sister collective called Blog-O-Ween being put together by my pal Cody, the Crooked Ninja Turtle Sensi. Be sure to check them out as well.

Day 30 is alive, ALIVE!

We’re up to the, uh, eve of All Hallows Eve, and have the final classic monster of the 2013 Garbage Pail Kids Halloween Countdown.  Not only is this the final last of the classic monsters, it’s also my personal favorite monster, Frankenstein’s monster to be precise…

30 - Frank N Stein

Stickers 112a&b, Frank N. Stein and Undead Jed hail from the 3rd series and feature artwork by Tom Bunk (seriously, those dimples always give it away.)  What is it about hulking monsters and pink and purple pants?  Maybe it’s why they’re always so pissed?

Day 29′s Halloween GPK will have you howling at the moon!

We’re moving right along with yet another classic GPK monster for day 29.  Creeping out of the third series we have stickers 116a&b, Eerie Eric and Berserk Kirk!

29 - Eerie Eric

I’ll be honest, I wanted to keep the classic monsters together for this countdown, but I also wanted some of my favorite pieces of art to fill the last week of the countdown and these Tom Bunk paintings just aren’t some of my favorites.  Though I respect him as an artist, this card in particular just feels off to me.  Bunk’s kids are a little more static and “hard” (it’s those dimples!), a little rougher around the edges and this werewolf just doesn’t get me howling.  It never really did.  Even though, I’m glad there was a werewolf in at least one of the sets and he’s not horrible, just not my cup of wolfs-bane tea…

A Nasty Way to Kick of the Last Week of the Countdown!

Kicking off the last partial week of the 2013 Countdown to Halloween with the head vampire, so to speak, sticker number numero uno, 1a&b, Nasty Nick and Evil Eddie!

28 - Nasty Nick

The concept in this painting is just so perfectly beautiful.  As a parody of the Cabbage Patch Kids, to have a Vampire kid seducing a Barbie Doll is just, so, darn, perfect.  My only complaint with the art in this one is that the bat, star and moon muddle up the image and aren’t needed in the slightest.  Series one, John Pound.  Sigh…

GPK Halloween Countdown Day 27 wants to suck…his own blood!

For the last weekend day of the countdown I decided it was nigh time to share a true vampire; the Bat creature from before was vampish, but this guy is pretty hardcore!  Sticker 411a&b, Van Pire and Bud Sucker…

27 - Van Pire

These suckers hail from the 10th series and were painted by the talented James Warhola.  I love this concept of sucking blood from an IV like a Capri Sun pouch!  Since this is such a specific concept I thought it would be fun to share another variation that was just release last year as a part of the newer GPK magnet card sets (as well as a bonus vampire!)

Halloween Countdown Day 26 will put a spell on you…

We’re up to the last Saturday in this year’s Countdown to Halloween, and I’ll be ramping up to my favorite holiday by sharing some more classical, monster-y GPK fun!  Today, we’re going all the way back to series one for a pair (does two make a coven?) of witchy sisters, stickers 16a&b, Weird Wendy and Haggy Maggie!

26 - Weird Wendy

This one is filled with enough Halloween-y imagery to choke a newt, and was again painted by the amazing John Pound (starting to run out of positive adjectives for the guy!)  This is one I have an over-sized card of hanging in Branded HQ, right near my Dead Ted and another card that’ll be popping up on the countdown soon…

GPK Halloween Countdown Day 25, You’ve got the Body, He’s got the Brains….

Though there were a few obvious pop culture references in the GPK series from the start, they didn’t start getting super overt until towards the end of the run.  Not that I’m against it, in fact, I’m kind of sad that the following Freddy Kruger homage is the only “branded” horror icon to really show up in the GPK universe…

25 - Claude Flesh

Stickers 617a&b, Claude Flesh and Slasher Asher, made their debut in the final series (15) back in 1988, and was painted by long time artist Tom Bunk.  Not only was this the final series, but these cards were also some of the final in the original numbering scheme (if you haven’t noticed, the number picks up from set to set…)  I really like this card and the art, not just for the Freddy reference (which is rad), but because it’s also simple and straight forward, and in a way a callback to the original series stickers.  I’m also glad that bunk chose a darker palette for the painting, side stepping a super gaudy red and green sweater and sticking with something a lot more moody and atmospheric.

Day 24′s monster will destroy your city!

After today there are only 7 more days till Halloween!  In honor of that I think Godzilla should destroy a city or something.  Or at least I can share this parody of Godzilla destroying a city or something…

24 - Fryin Ryan

Stickers 54a&b, Fryin’ Ryan and Charred Chad hail from the second series of Topps’ Garbage Pail Kids.  I remember pulling a Fryin’ Ryan from a rack pack of mixed 2nd and 3rd series cards back in the 80s and I was so excited.  This was one of my first monster GPK stickers from that series if not ever.
