One last Skeleton for this GPK countdown on Day 23!

The skeleton sub-theme of this countdown concludes today with one of my all time favorite zombie/skeletons ever, stickers 5a&b, Dead Ted and Jay Decay!

23 - Dead Ted

Not only is the artwork totally rad on this card, but it’s just so very Halloween-y and macabre!  The worms, the clawed hand silhouetted by the moon, the missing eye and the single buzzing fly, seriously one of the best GPK stickers ever.

Once again, I’m also helping to organize the annual Countdown to Halloween alongside the tireless and super cool monster kid John Rozum. So if you like what I’m doing over here, you might want to head on over to the Countdown site and check out the huge list of other sites participating in this year’s spooky festivities. There’s also a like-minded sister collective called Blog-O-Ween being put together by my pal Cody, the Crooked Ninja Turtle Sensi. Be sure to check them out as well.

Getting Bonier on Day 22 of the GPK Halloween Countdown!

I’m diving back into my series one stickers for today’s Halloween-y Garbage Pail Kid!  Cards 29a&b, the classic Bony Joanie and Thin Lynn!

22 - Bony Joanie

I’d have to say that next to Adam Bomb and Potty Scotty, Bony Joanie is probably one of the most recognizable of the early GPK stickers, and it still kind of gives me chills that I was able to get my hands on them.  You gotta love these super simple original series concepts executed so well by John Pound…

GPK Halloween Countdown: Day 21

Well, we’re kicking off week four of the Halloween Countdown with a bang, er, or some bones.  Yeah, bones.  For the new few days I’m going to showcase some of my favorite skeleton kids!  First up are stickers 95a&b from the third series set, Grim Jim and Beth Death!

21 - Beth Death

GPK Halloween Countdown Day 20, Mo Mummy Mo Mummy Mo Mummy…

It’s day 20 of the Halloween countdown, we’re two thirds of the way through the month and I have a lot of fun stickers left to share!  Today we’re closing out Mummy weekend with another single sticker that I don’t have the twin for, 468a Mummified Clyde!

20 - Mummified Clyde

I love, love, love that not only did John Pound go for the toilet paper gag with this painting, but it’s also the rad extinct colored toilet paper I remember loving as a kid.  The outhouse pyramid is hilarious too.  This sticker hails from series 12 released in 1988.

GPK, Day 19, It’s a Mummy Weekend Part 1!

Mummy came in my room!  I’m dipping back into my series 1 collection and unwrapping stickers 36a&b, Wrappin’ Ruth and Tommy Tomb!

19 - Wrappin Ruth

Ruth was the very first series 1 card I manged to get, and was the only one I had for a long time before lucking into an almost complete set.  Thus it has a very special place in my heart and collection.  Artwork by John Pound and it was released in 1985…

6+6+6= Day 18 of the GPK Halloween Countdown!

We’re up to day 18, the second to last Friday in the countdown.  You know what you get when you add 6+6+6?  Day 18, and the Devil!  Er, or these series 2 Garbage Pail Kids stickers, 64a&b, Hot Scott and Luke Warm…

18 - Hot Scott

There’s something supremely creepy about a baby devil.  Whether it’s the little bit of hair creeping up his little baby belly, or the pencil thin mustache.  Shudder.  I’m glad the name plate and logo were red, only enhancing John Pound’s gorgeous artwork in this painting.  Oh, and speaking of baby devils being creepy (and other creepy evil babies), here’s some more proof.  I made this baby devil, baby Pinhead, and Baby Leatherface for my sister years ago for Christmas (she dug weird things like I do.)

Day 17 of the Garbage Pail Kid Halloween Countdown!

We’re nearing the end of week 3 of the 2013 Halloween countdown and I’ve been having a blast!  Though I was introduced to the Garbage Pail Kids by my mom when the 3rd series came out, I never managed to put a full set together of those cards, but by the time the 4th series hit in late 1986 my need for (read begging) had reached a fever pitch and to quiet me the parental units bought me an entire box of the new stickers.  This was the first set I managed to complete on my own, and thus it has a special place in my heart…

17 - Max Axe

Today’s ghoulish GPK is less of a monster and more in the heartless killer category with stickers 137a&b, Max Axe and Deadly Dudley!  John Pound, still contributing the lion’s share of artwork to these series handled the painting of this macabre masked executioner.  Even though my parents ended up getting me a bunch of these cards, I believe that Max Axe was my first actual 4th series card as I found one wedged in a book that I checked out from my elementary school library (probably one of the Crestwood monster or Ideals Marvel comic books.)  I remember being so excited by it, the bloody axe, the basket full of parts and of course the skull at his feet.  Years later my favorite aspect of this card is the hilarious little tuft of yarny chest hair!

GPK Halloween Countdown: Day 16

So, we’re past the midpoint of the countdown and today marks the last day of the Mad Scientist sub-theme with two of my favorite GPK severed heads, stickers 160a&b, Decapitated Hedy and Formalde Heidi!

16 - Decapitated Hedy

These stickers hail from the 4th series and were painted once again by the great John Pound.  These are also probably some of Pounds best work in the entire series.  The color scheme and concepts are just so well done!

GPK Halloween Countdown: Day 15

We’ve entered the half-way point of the month and also this year’s countdown to Halloween!  Continuing with a mini sub theme of Mad Scientists, today’s Garbage Pail Kid features one of my favorite gory pieces of Tom Bunk artwork…

15 - Viv E Section

401a&b, Viv E. Section and Disect Ed (again with the misspellings, why not call him Dissect Ed?) is a little like a nightmare version of Operation!  These stickers hail from the 10th series released in the fall of 1987.  These later sets really started to amp up the gore and disturbing imagery to keep the “wow” factor of the series alive and this one really did the trick when I pulled it from a pack back in the day.  This was around the time I stopped collecting actively, but I couldn’t help myself and would pick up a wax pack here and there when I had spare change.  Some things to note, the 10th series was the turning point in the aesthetic of the GPK after the court case ended with the Cabbage Patch Kids folks.  Note the logo change from a CPK-esque parody to a more standard banner design, and there are some slight tweaks to the look of the kids in this set.  Gone are the half-moon eyes and soft plush bodies, replaced with wide circular eyes and hard plastic bodies that would usually feature some sort of crack to show the texture.  There are some collectors that draw a line right before this set, siding with the earlier series as their favorites, and for a number of years I was one of them.  I’ve since opened up to the later sets as there are some really fun concepts buried in this these cards…

Enter the Lab for Day 14 of the GPK Halloween Countdown!

There’s a new sub theme starting with week three of the 2013 Countdown to Halloween, mad scientists!  This’ll be a carry over from yesterday’s Fly homage, and carry on for the next couple of days.  First up is the super rad John Pound painted Mad Max and Brainy Brian, cards 72a&b, from the second series set…

14 - Mad Max

Though it’s probably just intended to be your standard bent glass tubing, I like to think that these guys are drinking juice out of a test tube with a bendy straw…
